Re: Fall 2023 Team Schedules

To all interested parties,

I just wanted to follow up and provide the details regarding possible match-ups this Fall in the event that certain teams are not participating, have low roster numbers, or may not be able to fulfill a commitment on a particular weekend due to roster size.

Most probably we will know prior to the start of the season if a team is unable to participate but there is always the hope that good first year student recruitment will enable a team to play their games.

Update as of 9/7/23

1. The U. at Albany Women’s Team are suspended by their school;

2. Maritime College Women (very low number of players) expect to be able to play 7s.

3. Molloy College Women may also have low numbers but hope to have at least enough players for 7s.

Below are the 5 weekend scenarios with alternate match-ups:

Weekend of Sat. 9/23 & Sun 9/24

9/23 Rutgers University Women at Siena College Women.

9/23 Maritime College Women at Fairfield v SBU B (or Fairfield B) Women.

9/24 Molloy College Women at New Paltz Women.

Weekend of Sat. 9/30 & Sun 10/1

10/1 Molloy College Women hosts Drew, Vassar & Maritime Women.

10/1 Maritime College Women at Molloy with Vassar & Drew Women.

Weekend of Sat. 10/7 & Sun 10/8

10/7 Montclair State Women at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Women

10/7 Maritime College hosts New Paltz Women.

10/8 Molloy College Women at Siena College Women

Weekend of Sat. 10/14 & Sun 10/15

10/15 TCNJ Women to Marist College Women

10/15 Maritime College Women hosts Siena College Women

10/15 Molloy College Women hosts Hofstra University Women.

Weekend of Sat. 10/21 & Sun 10/22

10/21 Fordham University Women at Hofstra University Women with Columbia & Maritime Women.

Please INFORM your Club Sport Director and school administration of these changes and feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Tony Brown

Women’s Teams Fall Competition – Schedules

For Immediate Release

College Rugby in the Tri-State area (NY-NJ-CT)

Monday July 24th, 2023

This year the Tri-State teams will compete in the National Collegiate Rugby postseason pathways. That means a Division II team as well as a Small College team will advance. There is also the possibility of Tri-State Division II team being granted an At-Large bid to the postseason Round of 16. Competition will no doubt be fierce as traditionally Tri-State teams have fared well in the playoffs. Below is a link to the Fall Schedules and if you want to look at the playoff picture then go to the home page, click on Playoffs in the main menu at the top of the page.

Re: Fall 2023 Team Schedules

To all interested parties,

I just wanted to follow up and provide the details regarding possible match-ups this Fall in the event that certain teams are not participating, have low roster numbers or may not be able to fulfil a commitment on a particular weekend due to roster size.

Most probably we will know prior to the start of the season if a team is unable to participate but there is always the hope that good first year student recruitment will enable a team to play their games.

The 2 programs that are most at risk are U. at Albany Women (currently suspended by school) and Maritime College Women (very low number of players). Molloy College Women may also have low numbers but hopes to have at least enough players for 7s.

I realize that the sooner we know the status of these programs the better it is for planning purposes i.e. buses and officials.

Below are the 5 weekend scenarios with alternate match-ups:

Weekend of Sat. 9/23 & Sun 9/24

9/23 Albany at Rutgers – if Albany is suspended Rutgers at RPI vs Vassar B.

9/23 Maritime at Fairfield v SBU B (or Fairfield B).

9/24 Molloy at New Paltz.

Weekend of Sat. 9/30 & Sun 10/1

10/1 Albany hosts Drew – if Albany is suspended Molloy hosts Drew & Vassar.

10/1 Maritime at Molloy with Vassar & Drew.

Weekend of Sat. 10/7 & Sun 10/8

10/7 Albany at Montclair – if Albany is suspended then on 10/8 Montclair at Siena.

10/7 Maritime hosts New Paltz – but if Maritime cannot play then New Paltz to RPI.

10/8 Molloy at Siena with Montclair.

Weekend of Sat. 10/14 & Sun 10/15

10/14 Albany hosts TCNJ – if Albany is suspended TCNJ to Marist.

10/15 Maritime hosts Siena – if Maritime cannot play then Siena to Marist.

10/15 Molloy hosts Hofstra.

Weekend of Sat. 10/21 & Sun 10/22

10/22 Albany at Fordham – if Albany is suspended then Fordham to Hofstra.

10/22 Maritime at Hofstra with Columbia & Fordham.

Again, let me state that we hope to know the status of each team prior to the start of the Fall schedule (the third weekend of September) but I wanted to let teams know of the options.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Tony Brown

Men’s Teams Gearing Up for Fall Action – Schedules

For Immediate Release

College Rugby in the Tri-State area (NY-NJ-CT)

Monday July 24th, 2023

The fires may have raged in Canada, the heat is still high in the eastern US and things are starting to come into focus for the Fall 2023 Rugby Season in the Met NY region.

The loss of 2 teams from the Division II ranks put a cat among the pigeons and left USMMA, Kings Point high and dry. Would that those teams seeking a Division II competition had joined Tri-State but alas they did not. So Maritime and Hofstra will play games in that DII and there have been attempts to play some cross conference games. The net result is that USMMA get to prepare for the NCR playoffs with their games, meanwhile Hofstra and Maritime will advance to DIII Conference semifinals.

The DIII Men, aka Small College Division, is also in a bit of turmoil with teams having less players on their roster. Covid-19 and the loss of the 2020-21 season did the damage. The top 2 teams will advance following the DIII games and play either Hofstra or Maritime for a shot at the NCR playoffs. The DIII teams may end up being those teams that can field a fifteen each week! Checkout the Fall Schedules below but if you want to see the Playoff Structure then go to the main menu on the Home page and click on Playoffs.

Tri-State Collegiate Rugby Conference 7s Championship 2023
Women
The 2023 final of the Tri-State Women’s 7s Championship was a repeat of 2022 with Columbia University facing Fairfield University. It turned out to be Ground Hog day as the New York City school repeated as champions taking the title with a score of 24-15.
The 7s Championship was hosted by Stony Brook University and fortunately the weather cooperated and there was no rain and the players were also grateful for the cloudy skies and comfortable temperature.
The top 4 seeds in the tournament based on last year’s finish headed each group with Columbia winning Group A going 3-0, Marist College winning Group B 3-0, Vassar College winning Group C 3-0 and Fairfield University winning Group D 3-0. All these teams won their respective quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals.
Marist College gave the Ivy leaguers a run for their money and in a well contested game Columbia prevailed 27-10. In the other semifinal Fairfield scored late in the first half to lead 5-0 and in a defensive battle that was all that was needed.
In the Championship game the back and forth was a credit to both teams and Columbia took the title 24-15.
Congratulations to both teams as they advance to the College Rugby Association of America (CRAA) Championship to be held in Texas in May.
Thanks to Stony Brook University and the Women’s Rugby team for hosting the 16 team tournament.

Tri-State Conference 7s Champions – Marist College Men
Red Foxes Repeat
The 2023 Tri-State Conference Champions are Marist College Men. The Poughkeepsie based school successfully defended their 2021 7s title and went undefeated, going 6-0 on the day.
Marist won its group and then advanced to the final with a quarterfinal win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point 26-5, a semifinal victory followed over Vassar College 28-5 and the title was earned by defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 21-7. Marist only conceded 4 tries in the 6 games and on top of some outstanding defensive work the quality of their restarts was the best of all teams present.
Congratulations to the young men of the Marist College Rugby squad and the coaching staff.

FALL 2023 SCHEDULES RELEASED

The Fall 2023 Division Schedules have been released and it looks like being another exciting year in the Tri-State Conference.

On the men’s side Marist College will look to defend their title but will face a more rigorous schedule than last year with the addition of games against Hofstra University and SUNY-Maritime College. These two schools will compete in Division II in the regular season but advance to the semifinals of the Division III as the pathway to a National Championship bid. “Hofstra and Maritime have large squads and can provide an A and B side game for opponents, hence their inclusion in the Division II regular season,” said Conference Commissioner Tony Brown.

In Division III the hope is that with more parity of competition the programs will be able to be more prepared for the playoffs so that the semifinals are meaningful games.

The Tri-State Conference Women will see defending CRAA Fall Champions Vassar College face stiff competition from last year’s runner-up Fairfield University as well as Columbia University. In addition Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Marist will look to launch their challenges and the newcomers to the top tier are Siena College in what promised to be an interesting season.
