Sunday August 26th – Atavus Coaching Clinic at Maritime College

Atavus Coaching Clinic – Sunday August 26th, 2018

On Sunday August 26th at SUNY-Maritime starting at 9:30 am and finishing at 3:00 pm the elite coaching development company Atavus is conducting a clinic for all rugby coaches in the Tri-State Rugby Conference.

This is FREE as the Conference covers the cost of the clinic.

What a great way to start the Fall 2018 season! Talk rugby skills, games, and tactics and take that information back to your team.

This will be an opportunity for Tri-State coaches to ask what they want to ask and have that area of the game addressed. For example, if you want to get a better understanding of attack options from set piece then just ask. When and how would you compete at the breakdown? just ask. You determine the curriculum at this clinic.

A coach may bring 3 or 4 players if they wish so they can be a part of the demonstration groups.

THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY, AT NO COST, FOR YOU TO GET INFORMATION THAT WILL HELP YOU AND YOUR PROGRAM.

THE INFORMAL SETTING WILL ALLOW YOU TO TALK AND INTERACT WITH COACHES AND THE ATAVUS STAFF MEMBER.

Please RSVP if you will attend with an e-mail to me, tobrown@vassar.edu, and if you will have some players with you include that number.

The Fall 2018 Schedules for the Tri-State Conference Collegiate Rugby Teams are now finalized. The majority of the games are scheduled on Sunday to help accommodate the Rugby Referees Society of New York as they strive to cover all the games each weekend.

Please review the links here to see your team schedule:

TS Fall 2018 M&W All Schedules

TS Fall Men DII 2018

TS Men NSCRO Fall 2018

TS Fall 2018 W DII

TS Women NSCRO Fall 2018 Schedules

Each team needs to have 2 individuals train as a referee as we embark on a program to develop referees. Given that one can earn $90 a game this could well be an opportunity that students should consider. Details of a coaching course will be publish this summer and it could well be that college age referees could cover games senior men’s and women’s club games on Saturdays in the Fall and/or High School games in the spring. If you are interested please contact the RRSNY.

Vassar Hosts Tri-State 7s Championship
The Vassar College Rugby teams hosted the Tri-State Conference Men’s 7s Championship this past Sunday at the Vassar College Farm.

It was a day that started cold and wet, improved a tad to cloudy and chilly before becoming very cold. So not exactly ideal conditions for 7s with the ball being very slippery and the surface the same. Games started at 9:00 am and the final kicked-off at 6:40 pm. In total there were 47 games and the referees of the Rugby Referees Society of New York kept the tournament on schedule doing a great job throughout..

The teams were split into 4 pools of 5 teams with the top 2 from each pool advancing to the quarterfinals.

William Paterson University Men’s Rugby went undefeated on the day at the and was the deserved winner after defeating the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the final 31-14. Full credit is due both teams after a tough long day of 7s action.

UW-Milwaukee came out of arguably the toughest group as they defeated Vassar College 21-7, Marist College 17-12, Montclair State University 36-5 and SUNY-Oneonta 45-5. Vassar and Marist are former 7s winners at the Tri-State Championship and Marist advanced to the semifinals on this weekend.

William Paterson University swept aside their group opponents Molloy B 56-0, SUNY-New Paltz 36-5, Marist B 57-0 and New Paltz B 35-0.

The Pioneers advance to the USA Rugby National 7s Championship on the weekend of May 19, 2018 and will represent the Conference for the second successive year. We wish them the very best of luck and hope they can bring back a National title to the Tri-State area.

MARIST COLLEGE WOMEN TRIUMPH AT CONFERENCE 7s
A wonderful final, after 30 games of 7-a-side rugby with 16 teams battling for the Conference title, saw the Marist College Women defeat the University at Albany Women 20-10.
It was a sunny warm day for a change in the Northeast and Fairfield University hosted the 4 pools of 4 in the TriState Conference 7s Women’s Championship.
The Rugby Referees Society of New York (RRSNY) provided a stellar crew and thanks are due to all the referees as the event ran smoothly finishing on time.
Fairfield provided the fields, medical coverage as well as security. The Fairfield women’s team, their coaches and the school administration, particularly Jon Dinihan, are to be thanked for their hospitality.
In pool play Vassar College Women, the University at Albany Women, Marist College Women and Siena College Women all went 3-0 and topped their respective pool.
Looking at the pool results both Marist and Albany certainly had the most firepower as they racked up some pretty hefty scores and had the best point differential. The Red Foxes scored 123 points in 3 games and conceded one try. Albany scored 102 points and did not concede any points!
The quarterfinals saw the 4 pool winners play the second placed teams from another pool. First up was Vassar versus Stony Brook and the former, the defending TriState 7s Champions, had a tough game falling behind 19-12 with just a few minutes left. But the Brewers rallied and clinched the game 24-19.
The University at Albany finished Hofstra’s day with a solid 29-7 win and that game was followed by Marist beating the hosts 29-0. SUNY-New Paltz upset the form book as they defeated Siena College 22-10. New Paltz had been a runner-up while Siena had won their pool.
The semifinals pitted Albany against Vassar and Marist against New Paltz. Albany jumped ahead of Vassar 5-0 and it was only in the second half that Vassar tied it at 5-5. But Albany capitalized on a couple of errors and two more tries made it 17-5 and a trip to the final for the Great Danes. Marist took on Mid-Hudson rivals New Paltz and ran amok. The Red Foxes thumped the Hawks 43-0 and entered the final as firm favorites.
Marist and Albany were clearly the best two teams at the championship and with Cat Sum refereeing this was always going to be a good game. Neeither team disappointed. Marist looked the fresher of the teams and jumped ahead 15-0 as the teams switched ends at the half. Albany rallied with a try and it was 15-5. A spilled pass in the Marist 22 brought a groan as Albany looked on the verge of staging a grandstand finish. But Marist countered, 20-5 and although Albany got one more it was too little too late.
Congratulations to Marist College Women, their coaches, family and supporters on a deserved 7s championship.

Central Teams Must Decide on Fall 2018 Format

Re: Fall Central (NSCRO) Divisional Format for Fall 2018
We have 9 teams in the Central Division so there are some issues which each team needs to look at and then decide their preference. PLEASE send your choice to tobrown@vassar.edu  Thank you for your cooperation.
Option 1: We have every team play every other team (8 games over 9 weekends) and then the top 2 play for the Championship. This means starting on Labor Day weekend Sunday September 2, 2018. The Championship game is on Sunday November 4, 2018.
Option 2: We have every team play every other team but start September 9th with one weekend being a double-header.
Option 3: We have every team play every other team but start on September 9th and schedule one mid-week game.

Option 4: We reduce the Central Division to 8 teams either by dropping one team or have one move to the Division II South (with Hofstra, Molloy, Montclair, TCNJ & NJIT). With 8 teams we can start on September 9th and every team plays every other team with a Championship game on November 4th between 1 and 2.

Option 5: We split the Central Division into a group of 5 teams and a group of 4 teams – A tier 1 group: Vassar, Maritime, New Paltz, Monroe & Union. A tier 2 group: Bard, Drew, Oneonta & Hartwick. The top 8 teams qualify for the Conference playoffs with tier 1 teams seeded 1-5 based on their regular season finish and the top 3 teams from tier 2 seeded 6-8. The bye weekend for the tier 1 teams could see them play a division II team that is on their bye weekend. We play quarterfinals, semifinals and a final. This schedule starts September 16 for tier 1 and September 23 for tier 2.

The Men’s 7s will be on April 29th, 2018 at Vassar.
