Tri-State Conference 7s – Déja-vu – Columbia v Fairfield
For Immediate Release
College Rugby – Women
Stony Brook University
Sunday April 7th, 2024
Lions Threepeat as 7s Champions in Tri-State & Siena College wins Small College title.
Division II – Columbia defeat Fairfield
While the end result was the same as the previous 2 years, with Columbia University taking the Tri-State 7s title, the road to that victory was very different. The Tri-State divided the 10 Division II teams into 2 pools of 5 with the top 2 teams from each pool advancing to the semifinals.
In pool play Columbia started as expected but then in game 3 stumbled against Stony Brook University losing 10-5 to the hosts. It was nip and tuck as Marist College certainly looked capable of going undefeated in pool play having already beaten Stony Brook 12-5. But the Lions of Columbia took care of business beating Marist and won the pool although both teams had the same 3-1 record.
In Pool B it was last year’s runner-up Fairfield University who took the honors going 5-0 and second place went to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) who went 4-1 with wins over Vassar, Montclair State and Rutgers.
Columbia fell behind in their semifinal but rallied to beat TCNJ 19-17 and on the other side of the draw Fairfield dispatched Marist 24-10.
In the Championship game Columbia shut out Fairfield 22-0 and has the opportunity to play at the CRC 7s.
Small College – Siena defeat Hofstra
The Tri-State Small College Division had 6 teams and given the distances traveled it was felt that 1 pool with everyone playing each other and then a final between the top 2 would make for an excellent competition. Teams were allowed extended rosters. Of the 6 teams 3 emerged as clear contenders with those being Drew, Hofstra and Siena. Drew decided to withdraw despite being 3-1 so the Hofstra game was a forfeit.
Hofstra had beaten Siena 10-7 in pool play and the final would see a rematch. It was close yet again but Siena prevailed 17-15.
Congratulations to all the teams present for a full day of Rugby 7s.
Many thanks to Stony Brook University for hosting the event and good luck to Columbia, Siena and Fairfield in their bid to play at the CRC event at the end of the month.

Sad News
The Sheriff’s Office said the student killed in the “fatal car versus pedestrian accident” was Raymond E. Rattray, 22, of New York City.
In a letter to members of the college community, college president Darrell P. Wheeler said Rattray was a philosophy major in the school’s Educational Opportunity Program and a member of the Men’s Rugby Club.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Raymond’s family and friends and to the faculty and staff who had the privilege to know him,” Wheeler said in the letter.
Police said they determined through an investigation that on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at approximately 5:11 p.m., Rattray, “was walking home from class on Route 208 on the shoulder of the south bound lane and was struck by a dark colored sedan traveling south.” Police said that the “vehicle fled the scene” but that it “sustained damage to the front-end on the passenger side.”
At around 1:16 p.m. on Wednesday deputies responded to state Route 208 between the area of Hawk Drive and Cross Creek Road “for the report of a deceased subject found on the side of the road,” police said. The area is near the SUNY New Paltz campus. “When deputies arrived, they located a deceased male in a wooded area approximately 20 feet from the road,” police said in a news release.
Police had announced the closure of Route 208 at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, and the reopening at around 8 p.m.
The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, New York State Police BCI, the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office, SUNY New Paltz Police and the Town of New Paltz Police Department, the release said.
New Paltz students who need assistance “in processing this sad loss” may contact the SUNY New Paltz Counseling Center at (845) 257-2920. College employees may contact the Employee Assistance Program at (845) 257-2886, Wheeler said.
The investigation remains open and active, police said, asking “anyone who may have witnessed this accident or has information about this accident” to call a Sheriff’s Office detective at (845) 338-3640 or call the confidential tip line at (845) 340-3599.
Rattray is the second college student killed in a hit-and-run car crash this month in Ulster County.
